PS Ryde
Paddle Steamer Ryde - PS Ryde was built in 1937 by William Denny and Brothers, Clydeside. As a Southern Railways steamer she served as an Isle of Wight ferry and excursion vessel until 1969. Throughout the Second World War she served as a minesweeper in the Thames Estuary and Dover Straits. Returning to the Isle of Wight in 1971 she was converted to a hotel and later a nightclub (know renamed Ryde Queen). From 1989, when the nightclub closed she fell into disrepair and unfortunately her condition has deteriorated since.
Pictured here in 1968 on charter to Gilbey's Gin.
The shot is part of the sky photos collection which we acquired in 2024. It is a modern scan from an original large format negative.
